In Praise of Peaches

I had been hoping to post about macaroni salad today, but you know what they say about “best laid plans”… Basically, I tried out a new idea for a mac salad, and while it was decent, it just isn’t ready to share with you yet. So you’ll just have to settle for some peaches for now.

Do you love peaches? I do. I love the way a perfectly ripe one almost has a passionfruit-like scent that seems to cling right to its fuzz. I like how you have no choice but to get super juicy and messy (just like a little kid) if you try to eat one out of hand. They are sweet without being cloying. Peaches are one of those things whose short season seems to make them even more special. Explaining my love of them to you, I feel like Kramer trying to convince Jerry to eat one of his “Mackinaw peaches” on one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes.

But not everyone shares my love of peaches, I know. My husband seems to be ambivalent about them. Lots of people also seem to have a problem with the fuzziness of peaches, and opt for nectarines instead. I think it’s a texture thing for them. But I think most of the people who don’t like peaches have had a bad experience with a mealy out-of-season peach, or a slimy canned one. Which is too bad, because that means they are missing out on all the awesomeness of a real peach.

I took a lot of pictures of these peaches trying to capture their juicy essence. Alas, there is no way to convey scent via computer, so these pictures could never quite capture the best part of a peach. I hope that if peaches have come into season in your area, you take advantage of this sweet time of summer and get yourself some. And if you go a little crazy and buy too many (hey, it happens to us all), here are some other ideas to enjoy peaches (once you’ve had your fill of juice-dripping-down-your-arm-deliciousness):
